Expanded artist, songwriter, label and publisher credits on YouTube
We’ve all been there… you’re watching a video on YouTube—maybe it’s a gaming video, a short film, a DJ set or artist video you’ve stumbled upon or were recommended —and you’re struck by an amazing song. But what’s it called? Who performed it? Who wrote it?
Starting today, we’re helping answer those questions with “Music in this video”— crediting the heroes who contributed to the music you love across more than half a billion videos. The feature will provide credits and music discovery information on both music videos and - for the first time ever on any platform - fan-uploaded content that features recorded music.
For over half a billion videos that contain music, when you click “Show more”, you’ll see more detail about the artists and songwriters, and the labels and publishers who represent them, including a link to the Official Artist Channel and official music video when available.
“Music in this video” strives to provide greater recognition and exposure to the people who contribute to the creative process. It also provides more opportunities for artists and songwriters to reach YouTube’s diverse audience, whether those viewers come to the platform for music videos, science experiments or beauty vlogs!
And for fans, when a song catches your ear in a video, you can now learn more and dive in deeper by following a link to the official video when available to discover even more about the creators of the song you’re digging.
Bringing “Music in this video” to the diverse content that exists on YouTube is made possible due to the data and technology behind Content ID, which allows copyright owners to identify and manage their content on YouTube. It’s also possible due to YouTube’s partnerships with record labels, music publishers and music rights societies around the world.
YouTube is committed to providing recognition to all of the people who contribute to the creative process, and this is just the beginning. Through our industry partnerships we will expand the scope and quality of data to ensure all creators are credited as completely and accurately as possible.
So, next time you hear music in a video, don’t forget to hit “Show more” - you just might discover your new favorite artist or songwriter.
